Levels 7A & 7B – Phase 4: Polysyllabic Words

Levels 7A and 7B align with Letters & Sounds Phase 4. No new phonemes are introduced. Instead, children learn to read longer words with consonant clusters and begin breaking words into syllables. This stage supports reading fluency and accuracy.

Course curriculum

Levels 7A & 7B

CVCC & CCVC Words | Polysyllabic Words

Levels 7A and 7B move children beyond basic phonics patterns into more advanced word structures. At this stage, children learn to read longer and more complex words by recognising consonant clusters and breaking words into manageable parts. These levels support the transition from early reading to more fluent, independent reading.

Learning continues to be supported by interactive phonics games on iOS and Android, providing structured practice and reinforcement.

Completion of Levels 1A–6C, or equivalent phonics knowledge, is recommended.

What Will My Child Learn in Level 7A & 7B?

In Levels 7A and 7B, children learn how sounds work together in longer word structures and how to decode words with more than one syllable.

Word Patterns Covered

• CVCC words (e.g. milk, tent, jump)

• CCVC words (e.g. frog, clap, stop)

• Polysyllabic words (words with two or more syllables)

Children learn to:

• Read words with consonant clusters accurately

• Blend multiple sounds without adding extra vowel sounds

• Break longer words into syllables

• Blend syllables together to read longer words

Key Skills Your Child Will Develop

By the end of these levels, your child will be able to:

• Read CVCC and CCVC words fluently

• Decode longer words using syllable blending strategies

• Improve reading accuracy and speed

• Build confidence when reading unfamiliar words

These skills are essential for reading longer texts and storybooks.

Learning Through Games & Practice

All word patterns taught in Levels 7A and 7B are reinforced through interactive games and structured activities on iOS and Android.

Children practise by:

• Blending consonant clusters in words

• Segmenting and blending syllables

• Reading longer words through guided repetition

The structured, game-based approach ensures children practise advanced skills while remaining motivated and engaged.

Who Is This Level For?

• Children who have completed Levels 1A–6C

• Readers who can decode confidently but struggle with longer words

• Children ready to read beyond simple CVC words

These levels are ideal for children preparing to read longer sentences and early chapter books.

Why These Levels Are Important

Levels 7A and 7B bridge the gap between phonics and fluent reading. By mastering consonant clusters and polysyllabic words, children gain the tools needed to tackle real-world texts with confidence, accuracy, and independence.
