Levels 3A & 3B
Letters & Sounds – Set 3
Levels 3A and 3B continue to build on the phonics foundations developed in earlier levels. Children learn new letter sounds and are introduced to double-letter sounds, helping them read more accurately and confidently. At this stage, children begin to recognise common spelling patterns and apply them when reading simple words.
Learning remains supported by interactive phonics games on iOS and Android, ensuring consistent practice and steady progress.
Completion of Levels 1A–2B, or equivalent phonics knowledge, is recommended.
What Will My Child Learn in Level 3A & 3B?
In Levels 3A and 3B, children expand their sound knowledge and learn that some sounds can be written using double letters.
Letters & Sounds Covered
• Level 3A: h, b, f, l
• Level 3B: ff, ll, ss
Children learn to:
• Recognise new single-letter and double-letter sounds
• Pronounce sounds clearly and accurately
• Understand that double letters represent one sound
• Blend sounds to read a wider range of simple words
Key Skills Your Child Will Develop
By the end of these levels, your child will be able to:
• Read words with greater accuracy using new sounds
• Recognise and read words containing double letters (e.g. bell, off, hiss)
• Blend sounds more smoothly and confidently
• Develop stronger early spelling awareness
These skills support the transition from basic decoding to more fluent early reading.
Learning Through Games & Practice
All sounds taught in Levels 3A and 3B are reinforced through interactive games and guided practice on iOS and Android.
Children practise by:
• Matching sounds to letters and letter groups
• Blending sounds to read words
• Repeating activities that reinforce accuracy and confidence
Learning continues to be structured, enjoyable, and self-guided, allowing children to practise independently.
Who Is This Level For?
• Children who have completed Levels 1A–2B
• Early readers who can blend simple sounds
• Children ready to learn double-letter sound patterns
This level is suitable for children who are becoming more confident readers and are ready to recognise common spelling patterns.
Why These Levels Are Important
Levels 3A and 3B introduce key spelling patterns that appear frequently in early reading. Mastering these sounds helps children read more smoothly, reduces guessing, and prepares them for more advanced phonics and reading skills in the next stages.
