Levels 2A & 2B
Letters & Sounds – Set 2
Levels 2A and 2B build directly on the foundations established in Levels 1A and 1B. Children expand their knowledge of letter sounds and strengthen their ability to blend sounds smoothly to read a wider range of simple words. At this stage, children become more confident decoders and begin reading with greater accuracy.
Learning continues to be supported by interactive phonics games on iOS and Android, ensuring practice remains structured, engaging, and effective.
Completion of Levels 1A and 1B, or equivalent basic sound knowledge, is recommended.
What Will My Child Learn in Level 2A & 2B?
In Levels 2A and 2B, children learn additional letter sounds and start to blend longer sound sequences to read more words with confidence.
Letters & Sounds Covered
• Level 2A: g, o, c, k
• Level 2B: ck, e, u, r
Children learn to:
• Recognise new letters and digraphs
• Say each sound accurately
• Blend sounds together more fluently
• Hear and identify sounds at the beginning and end of words
Key Skills Your Child Will Develop
By the end of these levels, your child will be able to:
• Recognise a wider range of letter sounds automatically
• Blend sounds to read a larger variety of simple words (e.g. rock, duck, get, run)
• Improve reading speed and confidence
• Strengthen listening and sound discrimination skills
These skills move children from early sound recognition into more confident, independent reading.
Learning Through Games & Practice
All sounds introduced in Levels 2A and 2B are reinforced through interactive games and guided activities on iOS and Android.
Children practise by:
• Blending sounds to read words
• Playing games that reinforce new sounds and spellings
• Repeating learning through structured, enjoyable practice
The system continues to guide children step by step, allowing them to practise independently while maintaining clear progression.
Who Is This Level For?
• Children who have completed Levels 1A and 1B
• Early readers who can recognise basic letter sounds
• Children who are beginning to blend sounds but need more practice
This level is ideal for children transitioning from sound recognition to more confident word reading.
Why These Levels Are Important
Levels 2A and 2B strengthen decoding skills and prepare children for more complex phonics patterns in later levels. By securing accurate sound recognition and smoother blending now, children are better equipped for fluent reading and spelling as they progress.
