Levels 1A & 1B
Letters & Sounds – Set 1
Levels 1A and 1B introduce children to their first letter sounds and the foundations of reading. Children learn to listen carefully to sounds, pronounce them accurately, and begin blending sounds to read simple words. Learning is supported by interactive phonics games on iOS and Android, making practice engaging and enjoyable.
No previous reading experience is required.
These levels focus on building strong sound awareness and early decoding skills.
What Will My Child Learn in Level 1A & 1B?
In Levels 1A and 1B, children begin their phonics journey by learning their first letter sounds and understanding how these sounds work together to form simple words.
Letters & Sounds Covered
• Level 1A: s, a, t, p
• Level 1B: i, n, m, d
Children learn to:
• Recognise each letter
• Say the correct sound (not the letter name)
• Hear sounds at the beginning of words
Key Skills Your Child Will Develop
By the end of these levels, your child will be able to:
• Identify letter sounds confidently
• Blend sounds together to read simple words (e.g. sat, pin, mat)
• Listen carefully to sounds within words
• Build early reading confidence
These are the essential foundational skills needed for long-term reading success.
Learning Through Games & Practice
All letters and sounds taught in Levels 1A and 1B are supported by interactive games and activities available on iOS and Android.
Children practise by:
• Playing sound-matching games
• Blending sounds to read words
• Repeating and reinforcing learning through guided play
This approach ensures learning is engaging, enjoyable, and naturally reinforced through repetition. Parents do not need to actively teach, as the system guides the child step by step.
Who Is This Level For?
• Children who are new to phonics
• Early readers, typically ages 4–6
• Children who recognise some letters but cannot yet blend sounds
No prior reading skills are required.
Why These Levels Are Important
Levels 1A and 1B lay the foundation for all future reading development. Strong letter–sound knowledge and blending skills are critical; without them, children often struggle later. These levels ensure children begin their reading journey correctly and with confidence.
